Hey Everyone,
This week's club meeting was pretty intense considering all of the events that overlapped and even ran over our club's schedule slot. Hope everyone's Friday was well spent at your event of choosing. A recap on the club this week was mostly spent doing homework and relaxing with fellow students, sharing ideas, critiquing each others work, and, of course, much needed laughter. Other than that, it was two hours well spent. So for this update we have a few links for everyone. Lots of fun things happening today! Unfortunately these three events going on overlap each other, so it's up to you to decide what you want to do!!
- Ideation's onsite meeting will be recreational where we can all get together and tackle homework/upcoming midterm projects. Don't worry, we'll have our weekly concept challenge as well. This happens from 4PM-6PM in room 140 at 540 Powell (illustration bldg.)
- Nicholas Villarreal's event where he will talk about character and composition design. That's at 4PM as well, and held at the Morgan Auditorium at 491 Post. If you haven't been to one of his talks yet, I highly suggest it. Lots of greatness from this man.
- Children's Book Club is hosting a "Self-Promotion Workshop" with guest speaker Angela Dominguez who just published her book "Let's Go, Hugo!" being featured later today. That's at 3PM in room 130, the one right next to us.

Ideation's first recreational meeting complete
Hey Everybody,
It was decided that yesterday's club meeting would be a recreational/ homework meeting. Seeing as we are in our fourth week of the semester. It was a great experience to be surrounded by other hard working students, knowing what they are working on, and asking for critiques if needed. We were happy that people were able to relax and share their inspirations by sharing art books and discussing fun topics like video games. These meeting are the most valuable to us because it's a gathering of motivated and inspired artists who are passionate about their studies.
We continued our sketch challenges with this week's theme being: "Draw your worst fear" (45 minutes)
This was a fun challenge to explore yourself and get to know more about other people. In the meeting, quite a few people haven't really thought about their worst fears. There were many comedic and true fears that we saw many people agree with. The majority of the club did find the theme challenging because the subject required the artist to not only pin-point their fear(s), but also depict it in a way the viewer would understand within a time span of 45 minutes. It was a nice twist from our usual concept challenges, which we may bring up again in the near future.
If you find yourself free on Friday afternoons and just want to relax and meet highly motivated and (funny) neat people, stop by at 540 Powell in room 140. Next week (March 8th), we will be doing another recreational meeting to help people catch up on work and relax before mid terms hit, as well as our weekly sketch challenge! variations of a particular location is key to creating a dynamic sense

wondering if they have enough experience. It's truly good for all levels
as we will take a mixed media sketchbook approach in how to navigate
your ideas to paper before you commit to larger paintings or digital

Second Meeting -spring 2013 Complete
Hey Everyone,
Just a quick recap on this week's club meeting, for it was one we will remember for many moons to come. We started with a discussion topic on constructive and non-constructive critiques and had everyone in the club share any "horror or even successful critique stories." We learned much in how certain approaches teachers take can motivate us. By either making us frustrated or even mad, to challenge us to prove we can do better. Some even showed that a few well placed positive words can be all that is needed for someone to turn their work around. We learned as well on saying nothing is probably the worst you can do on critique for others, for it is neither positive or negative. We found many (smart) students take notes when given critiques and take said notes home and apply the suggestions they found the most beneficial to improve their work. This lecture was very useful to see how others work and how they can "FIT IN" in the professional world since most companies in any industry have multiple meetings to go over content being created for a project and critique the work as either being successful or if it should be thrown out entirely for it does not work for the project at the moment......
Then a man with a big MANSOME beard came in to share his knowledge and experience with us. Alumni "George Cwirko Godycki" and this we know was a very special quest speaker for not only did he share his experience in and out of school but far beyond it, even going so far as to see his growth from a child drawing for fun, then a student, then a professional and now professor. To see his enlightenment and philosophy towards art education as being a cyclical nature and that it goes far beyond school, and never stops. The best quote we could find to fit George was this:
This was very true for George because he doesn't work when drawing. He is having fun which is truly the best way to progress and exceed in any endeavor. So if you see George walking around Powell, please say thank you for sharing his unique knowledge with us, We sure will :] Oh and if you missed this week's meeting and have no idea who we are talking about, here is a video link of George Cwirko Godycki drawing - Enjoy! First Meeting-Spring-2013-COMPLETE!!
Good News everyone!! We had a total of 19 members show up on the first meeting and we could not be more pleased with the turnout. An overview of the meeting was a brief history of the Ideation club and how it has transformed into what it is now. Then introductions of the club officers and members. This was particularly useful for we saw many of the new "visual development" major focused members and even some new ones like 3d modeling/sculpting and film design and of course Illustrators and concept artist. Which are all welcome in the club for in the Industry we will all be typically working with a broad spectrum of talented individuals on a production/project. The concept of "Ideation" was discussed because this term we have noticed is hard to get into the member's minds as one of their greatest tools to stand out in a world full of talented/creative artist. Then we proceeded with a sketch challenge.
Combine- Cuttlefish-Turkey- in a Swamp
Time limit- 45 mins
This challenge turned out great! So many individual interpretations were developed and even vastly different stories were conveyed. We remind you for companies will often have creative challenges like this to see if you are more valuable than other artist applying for the same position, plus they are just fun and a great way to thrust yourself out of a safe, comfort zone and into new creative adventures. Please don't forget about the Ideation club's Tumblr account. (there is a link to the right) We suggest posting your sketch challenges in their fresh 45 min forms, then if you find the time in the future, continue to work on the sketch and take it further. The process will show you what you spent the most time developing and where you can improve it. Please post the new and improved ones as well, we love to see them.
